Contiguous will mean the side of a territory must be touching the side of another territory owned by the player; not just the points of the hexagons touching.

I feel like empire of total territories/tiles, keeps the dream alive of maybe a wild card type manuever attacking an isolated territory. Say for instance someone has whittled down an opponent to only a few tiles nest to them, but then a third party crashes into this area to secure some kind of advantage... Could be legendary!!!

I say the same about someone coming in and breaking an Empire in 2.
If you have 2 clusters of territories joined by 1 or 2 in the middle, the 1 or 2 in the middle will be more vulnerable to attack and will be very enticing to the Attackers, just like in real war.
People might still attack territories not touching their own, but it would be in order to disrupt a fellow player's Empire, not necessarily to add to your own.
Or, someone might attack a not-as-well-defended territory not touching their own so that NEXT turn they can attack the territory in between them with more Attacker bonuses. Strategy.

I have changed my vote after careful thought on the issue... It does not make sense that you would attack a crazy far away destination when you wouldn't be able to support it. I think Operation Market Garden from WWII(http://youtu.be/tYV1aDLkEo0) pretty much shows this... Troops without a support line are threatened and will not be able to hold the territory until we go with a points per tile system. If a player were to land 2000 points worth of troops behind enemy lines then yes, they could last several turns, however their survival is based upon the eventual unification of the territories... so a unified territory system seems the most realistic.

Winner = A Player's Empire is their largest unbroken (or "contiguous") group of territories.
