It is after all the rumor section.. and it is a rumor after all...
BUT... even the guys at 40k Radio, who honestly have a slant at defending any GW operation to some degree as servo knows, were saying that the ceo of GW is looking into selling the company.
I guess its a sort of "cash in your chips and retire rich" manuever.... But I think its a great thing for the game, if its true. I mean... get some people in that corporate office who know how to market and sell product... It just sounds great...
Could mean competitive pricing, possibly actual deals to buy in bulk... real business, and not how apple does it!
As far as I can tell, it means fresh blood to a company that doesnt even listen to its shareholders, except to make a profit... Could be cool, of course the fear lingers of the sullying of the story and background etc...
I just dont believe a company would buy the IP and then disregard its hardcoreness.
Anyway, just thought it was an interesting rumor....

Oh, please, please, PLEASE let this be true.
Of course, any other company that buys GW would still make profit their primary focus (wouldn't be a very good company otherwise). But hopefully a new company would at least realize more money can be made by making your customers happy than making them hate the company.
They could try exotic and futuristic business strategies like appealing to Veterans, not just new customers; better IP management; reasonable pricing structures.

Obviously, I agree with both of you. However, like I said, the IP is very rich, and anyone not wearing an asshat would realize that vets spend a lot of money on the hobby. Nubies, yah... they buy stuff, maybe enough to figure out its complicated and give up... then sell it to me on ebay!(*laughs outloud*)
Yes reaching one part of the market is a good start. But how many completely new players are going to adepticon or other tournaments. If your not into gaming at a certain age... I personally feel like you probably have very little interest in games of thought and prefer games of physical means. So yes, going after the children of rich people works to a degree.... But I personally believe any company that would buy them would at least look at the broader spectrum.
Yah... I mean it is the Dark millenium, it is all about exploding bolter rounds, cults of Chaos and Genestealer alike. Its an actually well detailed environment that is not "Leave it to Beaver" and I think a professional company buying the IP would recognize that this is why it sells.
They could butcher it... But with real competition abound ie warmachine, helldorado, malifaux, etc... It shows that people who buy games are not looking for my little pony or GI JOE... Those were what we played with before we knew how rotten the world is. So I dont think a smart person would ruin the IP...
I just hope that Tom Kirby is sitting up in his Golden Throne of stupidity saying," I am losing market share to other upstarts and I cannot figure out why.... Maybe I should just wash my hands of it so that I dont look like an idiot when raising the prices no longer covers up a loss in actual product sold."

Yep, the rumor on GW selling has been going around for almost the last 2 years or so. It seems to make sense considering the constant price hikes, the attempt to cut down costs (like dropping employment levels at the stores, cutting out tournament play, limiting store hours, removing specialist gmaes, etc) and the ramped up release schedule. It would seem they are trying to convey the image of being a highly successful venture and make it more appealling to potential buyers. They have been turning a profit...but actual sales have been down. Cutting costs and raising prices worked for them in this area for the last couple of years, but will it still work? I heard today about one of the local stores in the area; the owner was contacted by his GW rep and given FREE merchandise to sell; once sold, he can then forward the payment for the merchandise. He mentioned GW NEVER gives the stores free merchandise; everything is cash in advance before GW sends it to them, so this is a big indication that something is up. He thinks GW is finally feeling the pinch of taking advantage of their customers a little too much. Who knows? But it is definitley worth noting as being something of interest.
BTW, the rumor mill has also indicated the most likely buyer (again, it's a rumor) would be Hasbro. They own Wizards of the Coast and would most likely be one of the only companies who could successfully handle GW products. SO I thought Johnny's comment "It shows that people who buy games are not looking for my little pony or GI JOE" was had a slight taste of irony!

It still boggles my mind that they dont have a professional painting team *cough*Eavy Metal*cough* paint display models to sell their new products... I mean, the guys at the stores are good... but they are not paid for their painting skills...
Plus it would be inspirational...
Hasbro seems to have kept magic alive... even Ghostwheel and Erontherelentless have picked up cards for fun...
Gives me hope!

>...but let's all hope for no "My Little Pony" armies roaming the battlefields of the Far Future...< There is a player that has a My Little Pony themed army who posts on Dakka Dakka. And it's a dude, not a chick. But hey, if he likes it and it makes him happy, more power to him.
The Hasbro rumor is just that; I don't know that they've actually expressed interest, but they've come up frequently in talks about what company would best be able to handle GW. Personally, I wish it was AOL just so I could listen to Tim Armstrong fire the GW staff during a company pep rally.

I was chatting with Homer over at Draxter today... and he mentioned magic was also bought by hasbro... To be honest I have only heard good things about it in the last couple years.
Maybe they have a plan of sorts to run popular gaming IP's they aquire in a way people want to play them...
